When someone pictures the loneliest places on earth, urban environments would not come to mind. Yet, at the right time urban settings are just as isolated and lonely as the most rural settings in the country. With this series, i wanted to reflect the busy urban community as more isolated that one might imagine and sometimes calm and serene. Through my use of lines and symmetry I tried to show the overall simplicity, isolation and calmness of an often hectic place.
At some point in our lives we have all felt lonely from one time to another. It’s not necessarily a sad time, but a moment when you realize you’re on your. But this is when you find who you are and who you want to become. It’s that exact moment I tried to capture through this series. People and scenes usually alone. For example in image #11 where a lone feeble hand hangs on the escalator rail, reflecting a single instant of their solitary commute. Movement in image #3 reflects the contrast between the still woman and the speeding blur of the train. I have discovered urban environments can indeed be a place of solitude and self reflective moments.
